Joan Levy-Earle was an artist, a writer, an entrepreneur and proud promoter of Cornwall. Joan was an active member of the Writers’ Union of Canada and owned and operated The Sanctuary, a bookstore and artists’ supply business from 1988 to 2002. She published 12 books of memoirs, local history and poetry and wrote a weekly newspaper column, Hopelines, for 25 years. Artistically Joan was largely self-taught though she studied with renowned local landscape artist, Grace McLeod and served in turn as artist-in-residence in many local schools. Throughout her career, Joan held over 20 solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows.

Joan Levy-Earle était une artiste, une écrivaine, une entrepreneuse et une fière promotrice de Cornwall. Joan était une membre active de la Writers’ Union of Canada et a été propriétaire et gestionnaire de The Sanctuary, une librairie et un magasin de fournitures pour artistes, de 1988 à 2002. Elle a publié 12 livres de mémoires, d’histoire locale et de poésie et a tenu une chronique hebdomadaire dans un journal, Hopelines, pendant 25 ans. Sur le plan artistique, Joan était en grande partie autodidacte, bien qu’elle ait étudié avec la célèbre paysagiste locale Grace McLeod et qu’elle ait été tour à tour artiste en résidence dans de nombreuses écoles de la région. Tout au long de sa carrière, Joan a organisé plus de 20 expositions individuelles et a participé à de nombreuses expositions collectives.
