James Peachey was a British soldier and artist whose works are held by Library and Archives Canada and the National Gallery of Canada. His many watercolour paintings of Canadian subjects are credited with influencing the perception that Englishmen formed of Canada. Peachey is best known locally, however, for the first artistic view of Cornwall titled “Encampment of the Loyalists at Johnstown, a new settlement of the River St. Lawrence in Canada,” This painting is incredibly detailed and depicts United Empire Loyalists, the first non-Indigenous permanent settlers in Ontario. It is considered one of the most important paintings of early Upper Canada, Ontario.
